Bark Phone vs Gabb: two very different ideas of a safe phone
Gabb takes things off the phone. Bark leaves them on and watches. What each one costs, what each one lets through, and how to tell which philosophy fits your child.
If you’ve been comparing kid phones for more than ten minutes, you’ve reached the fork everyone reaches: Gabb or the Bark Phone.
They look like competitors. They’re actually two different answers to the same worry, and once you see that, the choice mostly makes itself.
Gabb takes things off the phone. Bark leaves them on and watches.
Gabb: the phone with less on it
Gabb’s whole idea is subtraction. The Gabb Phone 4 has no web browser, no social media and no open app store, and you can’t add them later. Gabb pitches it at roughly nine to fourteen, with the Gabb Watch for younger children.
What’s left: calls, texts, GPS location, Gabb’s own apps, and music through its own service. Parents manage it through the MyGabb app.
- Phone: $249.99
- Plans: $12.99 to $17.99 a month, plus a $30 activation fee. The higher plan adds Gabb Music+ and mobile data.
- Watch for younger kids: the Gabb Watch 3e, $229.99
The strength is that nothing needs watching, because nothing’s there. The weakness is the same sentence. The ceiling arrives early, usually around the age their friends start group-chatting somewhere Gabb doesn’t go.
The Bark Phone: a normal phone, watched
Bark started as monitoring software, and the Bark Phone is that software built into a Samsung Galaxy, according to SafeWise’s July 2026 review. It looks and works like an ordinary Android.
Parents approve app downloads and contacts, set screen-time limits, track location with geofences, and can switch off the internet remotely. Social media is allowed if you allow it, and Bark scans the accounts it supports for warning signs and sends you alerts.
- Plans: $29 to $79 a month, depending on data
- Phone: paid monthly over 24 months, on top of the plan
- Network: Bark Wireless only. It won’t work with another carrier.
- Terms: no contract, with a 60-day money-back guarantee
The strength is that your child carries a phone that looks like everyone else’s. The weakness: monitoring tells you about a problem after it happens, and not always quickly. In SafeWise’s testing, one alert arrived nearly 17 hours later.

The question that decides it
Don’t ask which phone is safer. Ask: does my child need things on the phone that I’d want to watch, or should they just not be there yet?
If the honest answer is “not there yet” (no group chats, no social media, no browser), Gabb does exactly that, and does it cheaply. Most nine- and ten-year-olds are here.
If they genuinely need apps, such as a school group chat, a class app or messaging their friends, Gabb will feel like a punishment within months, and the Bark Phone is the better bet. Go in knowing that watching isn’t the same as preventing. Someone still has to read the alerts and have the conversation.
And notice the thing both share: you’re buying their handset on their network. That’s a monthly bill, a phone that only works with them, and a device you can’t easily bring with you if you move or travel.
The third option neither company mentions
There’s a route between subtraction and surveillance: an ordinary phone where what the child can reach is decided at the home screen.
That’s how myna works on Android. The kid’s phone runs the myna home screen, so it shows the apps you’ve allowed and nothing else, on any carrier and in any country. There’s no new handset and no special network, and the lock itself is on the free plan. On iPhone it’s softer, because Apple only lets apps block things through Screen Time; we wrote up exactly what an iPhone will and won’t let a parent do.
It isn’t monitoring, and it isn’t a Gabb. It’s closer to Gabb’s idea, less on the phone, without having to buy Gabb’s phone to get it. We go into how that works, family chat, calls, location and asking for apps, in a phone for kids without the internet.
If you’re still earlier in the decision, start with safe phones for tweens and what you’re really buying, which covers Pinwheel and Troomi too. And if your child is younger still, a home phone might be the step before either.
What you will ask next
What is the difference between a Bark Phone and a Gabb phone?
Gabb restricts: no web browser, no social media and no open app store, by design. The Bark Phone is an ordinary Samsung Android with Bark's monitoring built in, so apps and social media can be allowed, and Bark watches them and alerts you to problems.
Which is cheaper, Bark or Gabb?
Gabb, by a distance. The Gabb Phone 4 is $249.99 up front with plans from $12.99 to $17.99 a month and a $30 activation fee. Bark's wireless plans run from $29 to $79 a month, plus a monthly payment on the handset over 24 months.
Can kids use social media on a Gabb phone?
No. Gabb leaves out social media, the web browser and open app stores on purpose. That's the whole design, and it's why Gabb suits younger children better than most thirteen-year-olds.
Can kids use social media on a Bark Phone?
Yes, if you allow it. Parents approve app downloads, and Bark monitors the accounts it supports and sends alerts. In SafeWise's July 2026 review, one alert arrived about 17 hours after the event, so treat monitoring as a safety net rather than a live feed.
Do Bark and Gabb work outside the US?
Both are built around their own US networks: the Bark Phone only works on Bark Wireless, and Gabb sells phones with its own service plans. Outside the US, the realistic equivalent is an ordinary phone with the controls set up on it.
